East Rainton Games and
History Project
'Before
and After' views of the East Rainton School mural. The mural
was
designed using stories and imagery created by the children (and
their
parents and grandparents) during after-school 'Living History' sessions.
Grandparents were encouraged to tell pupils what the village
was like in earlier years and to discuss how it has changed. In the
background are 'The Seven Pyramids'
- a reference to the slag-heaps behind the village. The village
church, with a sunburst behind it, is taken from the design of a
stained- glass window in the chapel. There are pit ponies
and a resting traveller, in honour of the local pub. Scenes from
the pit and the colliery cricket team (the only surviving remnant from
East Rainton's mining days) are depicted. In the foreground, we have
various games
played by the children, both past and present - Hopscotch,
Queenie, Hide
and Seek, Leapfrog, What's The Time- Mister Wolf? and Piggy
in the Middle.
